I think they said on Instagram that all of these new models will have metal bodies.
Mattel, please sell Matchbox to the Simba Dickie Group!

Thank you David. I know it might be a boring question, but regarding to those "Color Changes" of 2017, do you think Mattel Matchbox Team will alter those MAN numbers? In previous scenarios, new MAN numbers have been given if they were altered tools. We all know Matchbox hasn't made 1000 models since the late Lesney era counted by relevant real things, though the MAN numbers have topped MB1000. :D

Great post.

Dose anyone know when the 2017 matchbox will be released?

How many cars will be in the 2017 set?

My son wants to start collecting and I have no ideal when to start looking or how to tell the difference from 2015 2016 etc.

I keep seeing new cars in the stores but I cant tell if they are the start of 2017 or end of 2016.Thank you very much in advance.

For 2017 we should have 125 models, the first batch of 2017 should be out sometime before Thanksgiving. Also what you are seeing in the stores now is the last couple batches of 2016, I am hoping we see a minor change in the packaging to signify the 2017 models.

2017 cards will look very similar to the latest batches of 2016. First batches should be released in the next few weeks.

Sadly, Mattel don't give us the full range listing any more. This is why I will sit there and create lists like I do, so we can keep track on what is in each batch, and what adds up to each year.

As with 2016, the 2017 range will have 125 models in it. As we have just had the last batch of 2016, the next batch due will be the first of 2017. However, as is always the case, the first batch of a new year will still have roughly the last batch of the previous year included as well.

You should then find a new batch will appear roughly every month (a total of 12 a year), although if you rely purely on stores, each individual store will only restock when they are down to a certain amount, so can miss batches. They don't automatically get a new batch when it appears. This is why many will hunt around various stores to see which one gets a new delivery. Or some just avoid them completely and just order them through hobby stores which will automatically get each new batch in.

They don't tend to update the packaging each year to depict that year. There was a slight tweak during the 2016 model year, which was the first tweak for a few years. There has been no mention of a packaging overhaul so we are not expecting a different design for the new model year.

I hope this helps.

:) :D :P

I was afraid of that, probably the only way we will be able to tell 16 and 17 apart in the next case (should be case\ batch A) is the 2016 cars will probably say "2016 collection" while the 2017 cars will have there segments listed.

Look at the lower right quarter of the card and you should see something that is not on a 2016 card. :D :D :D

Hello to everyone,

Looking at the 2017 Matchbox car list (and those from previous years), a question comes to mind, which so far no one could answer. Hopefully, somebody here can shed some light. What happened with Matchbox over the last 15 years, excluding a partial comeback b/t 2004-2011, when real models got rare and these generics/fantasy vehicles made up the bulk of the line every year? Why Matchbox gave up on its tradition of making real world vehicles? Up until the early 90s, there was very little you could pass by at the store; now, there is little one could take with from a store when it comes to Matchbox. Why did they discontinue Convoys, the Twin Packs, Motor City? Why is the Matchbox website so primitive compared to say Hot Wheels? Why is Matchbox no longer comparable to its rivals Hot Wheels, Majorette, SIKU, Maisto, etc? Why this collapse? Can someone please clarify it to me since I cannot find an answer?

Thank you and sorry for the long post,

Yves

First, Mattel bought Matchbox so it would not compete with its own Hot Wheels brand. Second, Mattel's competitive advantage is the $ 1.00 selling price at the discount retailers. Third, there is more money can be made on generics than on licensed models.
